GRAVENHURST – Students from six Muskoka schools travelled by foot or by bus to the Gravenhurst Opera House on Thursday to watch Buck, an inspiring movie about a man’s miraculous relationship with horses. Three hundred students ranging in age from 10 to 19 were part of the third annual Fine Films Gravenhurst student screening, where students watch a carefully selected Canadian or international film and debrief their movie experience when they return to their classrooms.
Buck – the Horse Whisper on ABC Rural
Professional animal training – and in particular, horse training – underwent a total rebranding several years ago with the release of a book, and follow-up movie, The Horse Whisperer. Horse whispering describes a method of dealing with an animal that is both sensitive and nuanced by a trainer with a strong affinity for the animal.
The novel’s author Nicholas Evans based that description on the work of Buck Brannaman – a man he describes as the Zen master of the horse world. Buck is the focus of a movie – a documentary – released here in Australian cinemas on February 17th. It was an award winner at last year’s Sundance Film Festival. The movie is about Buck’s work with horses, his attitudes, and background. Cameron Wilson speaks with Buck Brannaman, horse trainer and subject of the movie ‘Buck’
BUCK 3.5 stars
Review: Mark Naglazas, January 25, 2011
You’ll like this if you liked Gorillas in the Midst, The Horse Whisperer, Seabiscuit, Grizzly Man.
It’s commonly assumed that abused children themselves become abusers, imposing the hurt they suffered on the next generation (violence being in the DNA was the subject of last year’s French-Canadian masterpiece Incendies).

A cast is good; a character is better.
As Indiewire detailed last month, the success of “Buck” had as much to do with the marketing of its subject as its subject matter. Horse-whispering cowboy Buck Brannaman is an honest-to-god unique character who easily translated the documentary’s concept to millions via in-theater and festival appearances as well as rapturous Today Show slots (where he was described as a “chick, horse, everything magnet”).
BUCK on National Catholic Register’s Best Films of 2011
Buck. Luminous and uplifting, documentarian Cindy Meehl’s homage to laconic, low-key “horse whisperer” Buck Brannaman is a powerful portrait of leadership, redemption, healing and understanding — a film that’s as much about being a better person as a better horseman. Mild language; references to an abusive childhood; a couple of violent horse moments and a moderately serious injury. Fine for older kids.

In the classic 1969 film Midnight Cowboy, Jon Voight, a naive would-be gigolo on the mean streets of New York, explains his odd outfit – Stetson and tasselled buckskin jacket – with the line “I ain’t a for-real cowboy. But I am one helluva stud!”
Voight’s character is called Joe Buck and another Buck is the star of the first truly great documentary film to hit cinemas in 2012. And you can’t help thinking that this Buck (surname Brannaman), could have the signature line, “I ain’t a for-real movie star. But I am one helluva cowboy!”
