Cindy Meehl: This first-time filmmaker came to Sundance with U.S. Documentary Competition entry Buck, a cinematic doc which follows Buck Brannaman, the cowboy who inspired The Horse Whisperer. It was quickly scooped up by IFC Films’ sister division Sundance Selects. SUNDANCE SELECTS TAKES NORTH AMERICAN RIGHTS TO CINDY MEEHL’S BUCK
Park City, UT (January 24, 2011) – Sundance Selects announced today from the Sundance Film Festival that the company is acquiring North American rights to director Cindy Meehl’s BUCK. The film, which is playing in the U.S. Documentary Competition section at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival premiered on Friday, January 21st. The film centers around Buck Brannaman, a living legend in the horse world, and was produced by Julie Goldman. Andrea Meditch served as a creative consultant on the film. Warmly engaging “Buck” is a portrait of Buck Brannaman, a trainer whose remarkable way with equines provided a model for “The Horse Whisperer” in both novel and movie forms. Subject is a very likable character whose teaching wisdoms are rooted in the Golden Rule: Having suffered a nightmarish childhood, he sees no reason why man or beast should be schooled in an abusive fashion. Sundance Selects pickup won the U.S. documentary audience award at the fest, and should do particularly well as a broadcast item after further fest play and limited theatrical exposure. Buck is a well-intentioned, albeit somewhat broad, documentary about a real life “horse whisperer.” It should be noted that Buck Brannaman doesn’t whisper so much as he goes about his business in a quiet, sincere manner. The fact that he helped Robert Redford on the set of Horse Whisperer is just icing on the cake, bonus bona fides, merely reaffirming what our eyes and ears already tell us about Buck’s level of expertise.
